The truth is far more complex and intriguing.
Protecting the earth means thinking smart. By swapping steel and concrete for timber, we can cut down net carbon dioxide emissions during construction. Timber can also be renewed with proper management – it’s a truly sustainable material.
90 Devonport Road, the new Tauranga Council office building by Warren and Mahoney, is a mass timber development that exemplifies sustainable construction. This building achieved an Excellence in Innovation award at the 2025 Building Nations – NZ Infrastructure awards; the judging panel commended the ‘bold shift away from traditional steel and concrete.’
Featurecraftwas beyond pleased to see this project’s success; after all, we’ve been highlighting the advantages of timber for years now.
We also have a personal stake in this development, as we created and delivered decorative batten systems for both the interior and the exterior of the office environment.
Outside, our aluminium battens (chosen for durability and weatherproof qualities) were mounted in the soffit areas, creating a bold contrast with the timber building frame.
Inside, our solid Western Hemlock timber battens beautified the wind lock entrance and the lift lobby ceilings, providing a lovely colour match to the other timber surfaces.
Our company has long been involved in sustainable forestry. We are accredited Chain of Custody suppliers, meaning that we are part of a proud line of environmentally ethical timber manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and craftspeople.
It makes us proud to see Aotearoa embracing the mass timber movement and creating stunning buildings that hold their own on the global stage.
